RIP My Wacom Cintiq

It was fun while it lasted (which turned out to be a pretty long time!)

Sad news. My Wacom graphics tablet died a few days ago. It was a Cintiq 22HD and I’d been using it since 2014-15ish. It served me well for probably a bit over 8 years and in hindsight it was a very good purchase. No regrets! That being said I’ve decided to go a different route when it comes to a replacement and not get another Wacom.

Ever since getting an iPad (Pro 12.9 3rd Gen) with Apple Pencil, I really wasn’t using my Wacom as much. The iPad has a big convenience factor, and the finger touch gestures come in really handy (my Cintiq wasn’t the touch version), then there is also Procreate which I really like using. I really tend to prefer the iPad as compared to the Wacom + PC w/ Clip Studio Paint combo.

I’ve decided to replace my Wacom with a monitor (I was using it as my graphics tablet and monitor) and stick with my iPad for digital art. Since my iPad is it’s slightly old and can’t handle some of my bigger files, I was slightly worried it might not be good enough but I’ve found that I can use the Astropad app to be able to connect my iPad to my computer if need be. It has a subscription fee but if I compare the yearly subscription to the cost of a Wacom (and estimating a Wacom at lasting 8 years), Astropad is much cheaper and does pretty much the same job. I’ve tried it out for a while and it seems like it will be plenty good for my purposes. Thank goodness for that since I wasn’t really looking forward to paying a big ol’ chunk of change for a new Wacom.

Oh, and for those who may see this blog but don’t know, I’m primarily a traditional materials artist. I use digital tools mostly for sketching and for merch designs like on my T-Shirts and Postcards.
